What This Tool Does

The Square Footage Calculator computes the area of rooms, floors, and outdoor spaces in square feet, square meters, and acres. Unlike simple area calculators that handle one rectangle at a time, this tool lets you add multiple rooms or sections — perfect for calculating the total floor area of an entire house, apartment, or commercial building. Each room is labeled for clarity, and the running total updates in real time as you edit dimensions.

Square footage is essential for real estate transactions, renovation budgeting, material ordering (flooring, paint, carpet), HVAC sizing, and property tax assessments. This calculator provides all three common area units simultaneously so you can reference whichever is relevant to your project.

How It Works

For each room, the calculator multiplies width by length to get the area in square feet. Empty or invalid inputs are treated as zero, so incomplete rooms do not distort the total. The sum of all room areas is the total square footage. Conversions are applied at the end: square meters = total sq ft × 0.09290304 (the exact conversion factor), and acres = total sq ft ÷ 43,560.

The room list is fully dynamic — click "Add Room" to create new entries, or the ✕ button to remove rooms you no longer need. Each room shows its individual area alongside its name and dimensions, making it easy to spot-check your measurements.

Worked Example: Home Renovation

Mark is installing hardwood flooring in his open-plan living and dining area. The space is irregular, so he divides it into three rectangles:

Living Room: 18 ft × 22 ft = 396 sq ft

Dining Area: 12 ft × 14 ft = 168 sq ft

Entry Nook: 6 ft × 8 ft = 48 sq ft

Total: 396 + 168 + 48 = 612 sq ft

Mark adds a 15% waste factor for cutting and pattern matching: 612 × 1.15 = 703.8 sq ft. He rounds up to 704 sq ft and buys 47 boxes at 15 sq ft per box. The calculator confirms his total is 612 sq ft, giving him confidence in his material order. Material Estimates by Area

Approximate material needs for different project sizes. Flooring includes 10% waste buffer. Costs assume $2-5/sq ft for flooring and $25-40/gallon for paint.

When to Use This Calculator

Real estate and rentals: Calculate the livable square footage of a property for listing descriptions, rental applications, or comparing apartments. Knowing the exact area helps verify landlord claims and ensures fair pricing per square foot.

Home renovation: Plan flooring, paint, drywall, and insulation orders with confidence. Material shortages and delivery delays are common — accurate measurements prevent costly reorders or excess waste.

HVAC and energy calculations: Heating and cooling systems are sized by square footage. A rule of thumb is 20 BTU per square foot, though insulation, climate, and ceiling height affect this. Accurate area measurements ensure your HVAC system is neither undersized (struggling to maintain temperature) nor oversized (cycling too frequently and wasting energy).

Gardening and landscaping: Calculate lawn, patio, or garden bed areas for sod, mulch, gravel, or seed orders. For more landscaping calculations, see our Mulch Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Square footage is calculated by multiplying the length of a space by its width, both measured in feet. For rectangular rooms, the formula is: Length (ft) × Width (ft) = Square Feet. For irregularly shaped rooms, divide the space into smaller rectangles or squares, calculate each area separately, and add them together. This calculator automates this process — add as many rooms or sections as needed and it sums the total.
