Understanding Overtime Laws
In the United States, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires that covered, nonexempt employees receive overtime pay for hours worked over 40 in a workweek at a rate not less than time and one-half their regular rates of pay.
Some states, such as California, also require daily overtime pay—typically 1.5x the regular rate for hours worked over 8 in a single day, and 2x for hours over 12. Always check your local labor laws to ensure compliance.
This calculator lets you customize both the daily threshold and the multiplier so you can model different legal regimes or company policies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Overtime is calculated as any hours worked beyond your daily threshold (default 8 hours). Those extra hours are multiplied by your overtime rate (default 1.5x) to determine overtime pay.
