What This Tool Measures
This typing speed test measures two things: how fast you type and how accurately you type. Speed is reported in words per minute (WPM) using the standard definition where one word equals five characters, including spaces and punctuation. Accuracy is the percentage of keystrokes that match the target text exactly.
Some tests also report characters per minute (CPM), which is simply WPM multiplied by 5. CPM is useful when you want a precise count of every keystroke rather than the rounded word equivalent.
How to Use the Test
Click the Start Test button. A random passage will appear. Type the text into the box below as quickly and accurately as you can. Correct characters turn green and incorrect characters turn red so you can see mistakes in real time. The timer runs for 60 seconds. When time runs out, your final WPM, accuracy, and character count are displayed. Click Try Again to take another test with a different passage.
Worked Example
Imagine you type 280 characters in 60 seconds with 96% accuracy. Because one word is five characters, your gross WPM is 280 ÷ 5 = 56 WPM. Your 96% accuracy means about 11 of those 280 keystrokes were incorrect. That is a solid intermediate result — faster than the general population average of 40 WPM, with accuracy high enough that corrections do not dominate your time.
Now imagine the same 56 WPM but with 85% accuracy. You made roughly 42 errors, which means a large portion of your effort went into backspacing and fixing mistakes. Your effective speed is much lower than 56 WPM suggests. This is why accuracy should usually be improved before chasing raw speed.
When to Test Your Typing Speed
Use this test before a job application that lists a typing requirement, so you know whether you meet the minimum WPM threshold. Use it weekly while practicing touch typing to track progress. Programmers, writers, students, and anyone who spends hours at a keyboard can use the results to set training goals and evaluate ergonomics.
Tips for Faster, More Accurate Typing
- Learn touch typing. Keep your fingers on the home row and avoid looking at the keyboard.
- Prioritize accuracy. Slow down until you can consistently hit 95% accuracy, then speed up gradually.
- Practice daily. Short, focused sessions of 15–30 minutes build muscle memory faster than occasional long sessions.
- Maintain good posture. Sit upright, keep your feet flat, and position the screen at eye level.
- Consider your keyboard. A full-size keyboard with tactile feedback can improve comfort and reduce errors compared to cramped laptop keys.
