Understanding Statistical Measures

Statistics help us summarize and understand datasets. Whether you are analyzing test scores, survey results, sales figures, or scientific measurements, these core metrics give you a clear picture of your data.

Mean (Average)

The mean is calculated by adding all values together and dividing by the number of values. It represents the central tendency of the dataset but can be skewed by unusually high or low outliers.

Median

The median is the middle value when all numbers are sorted in ascending order. If there is an even number of values, the median is the average of the two middle numbers. The median is robust against outliers and is often a better measure of "typical" value in skewed data.

Mode

The mode is the most frequently occurring value in a dataset. A dataset may have no mode, one mode, or multiple modes. Mode is particularly useful for categorical data.

Range

Range is the simplest measure of spread: the difference between the maximum and minimum values. While easy to calculate, it only considers the two extreme values and ignores the distribution of the rest of the data.

Frequently Asked Questions

The mean is the arithmetic average of all numbers in a dataset — add them up and divide by the count. The median is the middle value when the data is sorted. The mean is affected by extreme outliers, while the median gives a better representation of the "typical" value in skewed distributions.
