Understanding International Shoe Sizes

Shoe sizing systems vary significantly across countries and brands. The four major systems — US, UK, EU, and CM — each use different scales and starting points, which can make international shopping confusing.

The US system measures foot length in barleycorns (1/3 inch) starting from a zero point. The UK system is similar but starts from a different baseline, making UK sizes about 0.5 to 1 size smaller than US for the same foot. The EU (Paris point) system uses 2/3 cm increments and is continuous across genders. CM is the most objective measure — it is simply the length of your foot in centimeters.

Women's sizes are typically 1.5 US sizes smaller than men's for the same foot length. Kids' sizes follow yet another scale, roughly equivalent to EU minus 16. Many brands also offer width options (narrow, regular, wide) which further affect fit.

Why Sizes Differ Between Brands

Because each manufacturer uses its own foot mold (called a "last"), a size 10 in one brand may feel like a 9.5 or 10.5 in another. Materials also matter: leather stretches over time, while synthetic materials hold their shape. For the most accurate fit, always measure your foot in centimeters and consult the brand's specific size chart before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

For men, add approximately 33 to your US size to get the EU size (US 10 ≈ EU 44). For women, add about 31.5 (US 8 ≈ EU 39.5). Kids sizes are closer: add roughly 16–17. Use our converter for precise values across all systems.
